Chaenomeles speciosa 'Cameo' is commonly referred to as Cameo Japanese Flowering Quince. It is noteworthy for its compact size and abundant clusters of coral pink flowers in mid spring, slightly later than most flowering Quinces. It is a deciduous suckering shrub with a compact, rounded, spreading habit. Flower buds develop on year-old and older wood. In fall, fragrant, edible, greenish-yellow fruits appear and can be used to make jellies or syrups.
Cameo Quince is deer and rabbit resistant and thrives in full sun to partial shade in acidic, loamy, evenly moist, well-draining soils. Note of caution: Over-pruning will reduce fruit production for the current year and also be careful of its thorns. It does make a perfectly beautiful barrier.
