PIN OAK -
40-50 Feet Tall 40-50 Feet Wide--
Quercus palustris is commonly referred to as the Pin Oak. This native, fast-growing, medium sized oak is seen in moist lowlands and wetlands and has a broad pyramidal crown with distinctive branching. The upper branches ascend, however the middle and lower branches descend. The lower branches break off due to shading by other trees leaving pin-like stubs, hence the common name. Its bark is gray-brown and smooth when young, developing ridges with age.
The Pin Oak's leaves are glossy dark green in summer, turning deep red in fall persisting through winter. It is a popular street and landscape tree due to its rapid growth and adaptability. It thrives in full sun in rich, acidic, evenly moist, well-drained soil.
