Metasequoia glyptostroboides is commonly known as the Dawn Redwood. It is a large, fast growing, broad, deciduous conifer with fine textures, airy, light, bright green, fern-like foliage that is soft to the touch. As spring fades to summer, the foliage turns a deeper green, maturing to rich shades of orange and bronze in fall. Unlike other conifers, the Dawn Redwood is deciduous and drops its leaves for winter. Bark on mature trees is deeply fissured and broadens with age.
The Dawn Redwood thrives in full sun in rich, moist, well-drained soils. It can adapt to part sun, however, best colors are in full sun.
