SENSATION COMMON LILAC

Syringa vulgaris 'Sensation' is commonly referred to as Sensation Lilac. This is an incredibly popular lilac! It features a unique bi-color flower effect. Its sweetly fragrant purple flowers have a white margin on the petals and are produced on large pyramidal panicles in spring. Open branches are covered with bright green, heart-shaped leaves that stay attractive through summer.

Sensation Lilac thrives in full sun in rich, fertile, humusy, evenly moist, well-drained soils. It can tolerate light shade, however, best flower production is in full sun. Butterflies and hummingbirds are drawn to Sensation, but deer, not so much. When pruning, prune immediately after flowering to avoid removing next year's flower buds.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: select a location with full sun and rich, well-draining soil, ensuring the site allows for the air circulation necessary to keep its signature bicolored, purple-and-white florets looking sharp. Provide regular moisture during the establishment period and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Because this cultivar sets its buds on old wood, it is critical to avoid pruning in late winter or early spring; perform any light shaping or deadheading immediately after the flowers fade to protect the unique bicolored display for next year.
