SAMBUCUS NIG GUINCHO PURPLE
Grower Notes:
Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla 'Guincho Purple' is commonly referred to as Guincho Purple Elderberry or Guincho Purple European Elder. It is a deciduous, multi-stemmed shrub that is noteworthy for its pinnate leaves which open green, turn dark purple in summer and finally reddish-purple in fall. Fragrant, tiny pink flowers appear in June which contrast perfectly with the dark foliage, and then are followed by edible, dark purple berries with red stems in fall. The berries provide food not only to all the birds in the neighborhood, but humans love their tasty tang in jams, pancakes and elderberry wine.
Guincho Purple Sambucus thrives in full sun in rich, fertile, evenly moist, well-drained soils. It is partially self-fertile so plant two varieties for heavier crops of elderberries.
