NORTHERN BLACK OAK

Quercus velutina is commonly referred to as the Northern Black Oak, this large, deciduous oak is native to the upland hills, slopes and ridges from Florida to Texas, north of Maine, Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio. Similar to the Red Oak, its bark is almost black on mature trunks with deep broad furrowed ridges. Inner bark is yellow to bright orange. Leathery, shiny, dark green leaves turn yellow to yellow-brown to dull red in fall. Elliptic acorns have saucer-shaped acorn cups that cover up to half of the acorn. On mature trees, large crops of acorn appear every 2 to 3 years. A nice, medium sized shade tree for lawns, streets or parks.
