MERRITTS SUPREME BIGLEAF HYDRANGEA

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Merritt's Supreme' is commonly referred to as Merritt's Supreme Hydrangea. This compact and dense, mophead cultivar is one of the showiest summer-blooming hydrangeas with deep pink (or blue) globe-shaped blooms surrounded by dark green foliage. Flower color is dependent on the acidity of the soil. Reds and pinks occur in more alkaline soils while blues and lavenders occur in more acidic soils. The addition of aluminum sulfate to the soil will encourage more vivid blue color and adding lime will produce pink flowers. It blooms on old wood so protect the flower buds over winter, if necessary.

Merritt's Supreme Hydrangea enjoys partial sun in rich, organic, evenly moist, well-drained soils. Its size and long-blooming habit make Merritt's Supreme Hydrangea a perfect choice for flower arrangements.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining, rich soil protected from the hot afternoon sun. For pink and blue Hydrangea macrophylla varieties, bloom color is pH-dependent; keep soil slightly acidic for blue tones or adjust toward neutral for pink. White varieties remain stable regardless of pH. Water consistently to maintain soil moisture, as this variety is sensitive to drying out. Mulch around the base to keep roots cool and moist.
