BLACK PEARL™ EASTERN REDBUD

Cercis canadensis 'JN16' Black Pearl™ is commonly referred to as Black Pearl™ Eastern Redbud. It is a deciduous tree that is noteworthy for its dark foliage. Its glossy, thick, heart-shaped leaves are such a deep purple that they almost appear black, and it retains its dark color through summer. In fall the leaves turn a showy chartreuse yellow. In early spring a profusion of pea-like lavender flower clusters appear on bare branches before the foliage emerges and attracts bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators.

Black Pearl Eastern Redbud is deer and disease resistant. It thrives in full to partial sun in rich, fertile, evenly moist, well-drained soils.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize annually with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote healthy growth.
