Carya Illinoinensis is commonly referred to as the Pecan tree. This large, deciduous, generational tree is part of the Walnut family (Juglandaceae), and is the largest of the hickories, growing 70-100 feet and can even reach 160 over time. A nugget of history: Thomas Jefferson planted seeds at Monticello and gave a few to George Washington. Now it is the oldest tree in Mount Vernon.

The Pecan has a very large trunk that is slate gray bark and remains smooth for years. It is a most valuable tree with large, thin-shelled edible nuts that are grown and harvested and beautiful wood that is used for furniture and flooring.

The Pecan thrives in full sun in fertile, humus-rich, evenly moist, well-drained soils. Trees will begin producing a few nuts 3-4 years after planting. Significant production usually is in 6-8 years.
