BLACK PEARLS® CHINESE FALSE SPIREA

Astilbe chinensis 'Black Pearls' is commonly referred to as Black Pearls Chinese Astilbe or Black Pearls Chinese False Spirea. This selection is part of the Growing Colors® collection and is a showy herbaceous perennial with large, long-lasting purple flower plumes, tinged with blue, and held on sturdy stems surrounded by dark green, fern-like, clump-forming foliage. It will not flop over with the weight of the flowers. It blooms in midsummer for a few weeks and its dense foliage stays attractive and trouble-free all season. Flowers attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators.

Black Pearls Astilbe is deer and rabbit resistant and thrives in dappled shade in humus rich, evenly moist, well-drained soils. This later blooming variety is more tolerant of sun and drier soils, to a degree, than other varieties.

Companion plants for Astilbe include: Rhododendron, Hosta, Ferns, Heuchera, Ligularia and Japanese and Siberian Iris.

Planting Tips

To help Astilbe chinensis types settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in moist, rich soil with a slightly acidic pH. While it prefers dappled shade, Astilbe chinensis is more heat and sun tolerant than other varieties and will perform well in brighter spots if moisture is consistently maintained. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
