Acer palmatum 'Winter Red' is commonly referred to as Winter Red Coral Bark Japanese Maple. This is an excellent Japanese Maple selection that features showy color every season. A smaller version of the Sango Kaku Japanese Maple, the Winter Red Japanese Maple has coral bark on young branches and is most intense during the winter. New leaves emerge lime-green and turn to medium green, maturing to attractive shades of gold, orange and red in fall.

The Winter Red Japanese Maple thrives in full sun in the northern parts of its growing range, but prefers afternoon shade in the southern regions. New foliage may scorch in hot climates. It enjoys rich, fertile, evenly moist, well-drained soils. Avoid hot and dry sites.
